Firmware Update Procedure (Alpha)

Alpha is able to receive firmware updates via its Wi-Fi connection. In this way, we are able to offer continuous improvement of the device. The process for updating is simple and will not interrupt your normal writing process.

Connecting to Wi-Fi is enough to initiate an update if one is available. Alpha is designed to update automatically without you having to initiate it. You can simply connect to Wi-Fi and wait for the update to propagate on your device. Alternatively, you can manually check for a firmware update. Find those instructions at the end of this article.

Automatic Update Instructions

Step 1: Connect to Wi-Fi. Connect to Wi-Fi on your device. You can check your connection by holding the space bar to bring up the heads-up display.

Steph 2: Use Alpha as normal. When an update is available, your device will begin downloading the update the next time the device goes to sleep. There will be no indication on the display that it is downloading.

Step 3: Resume writing. When the update is finished, you should be back to where you left off writing. If you happen to turn Alpha on in the middle of an update, this message will appear: "Downloading firmware update. Please wait..." Simply wait for the update to finish, and once complete, the device will return to your draft.

Manually Check for an Update

Step 1: Open the main menu. Hold down the power button for 3 seconds to access the main menu.

Step 2: Find "Firmware Update." Use [pg dn] to find the firmware update option and select [1]. Your device will search for updates.

Step 3: Restart, if necessary. If an update is available, your device will prompt you to restart the device in order to download the update. You can choose to manually restart by pressing "Return," or you can resume writing and the update will occur on the next power cycle.

Step 4: Resume writing. You're good to go!
