What File Format Does Freewrite Use?

Freewrite saves your work in plain text and syncs to Postbox in plain text. But you can choose a default file type for your drafts to sync to third-party cloud services.

Simply navigate to the "Cloud Services" section of your Postbox account to choose a file-format default and the sync destination.

The file format options are TXT (plain text), MD (Markdown), DOCX (Microsoft Word), and FDX (Final Draft).

The default file type and destination will apply to all folders. If you require more flexibility and would like to assign each folder a different file type and sync destination, subscribe to Freewrite Plus and select "Advanced" on your Cloud Services page.

For those who don't want to sync to third-party cloud services, drafts are always available in Postbox. You can can download a file type of your choice directly to your computer from Postbox, or even copy and paste your work into your editing software of choice.

If you're working offline, you can connect your Freewrite to a computer via the USB cable that shipped with your device, and your drafts will be available as read-only TXT files. (Copy these files to your computer for editing.)

Send Button

Use the send button on your device to email yourself TXT and PDF copies of your current draft. This is always an option for creating a quick backup.

You can also email drafts to other people, like editors or writing partners, if you subscribe to Freewrite Plus.

You do not need to press the send button to initiate saving to your device or syncing to the cloud. This happens all the time in the background when your device is connected to Wi-Fi.

Markdown

To get more out of your Freewrite, use Markdown syntax to automatically render your drafts with formatting when saved as a DOCX or PDF. There are no settings to change to get started with Markdown. It is enabled automatically.

Fountain

For screenwriters looking to create a perfectly formatted screenplay, Freewrite supports the use of Fountain syntax. When your draft is saved as an FDX file and opened in Final Draft, your plain-text work will be rendered in perfect screenplay formatting.
